A 67-year-old woman was injured in Andheri (West) on Monday, April 14, after two metal barricades fell on her. The barricades were placed at a road repair site. The incident took place around 4:45 pm due to windy weather.
The woman has been identified as Ritu Ahuja. She is a resident of Shastri Nagar. She was on her way to a satsang hall off the Link Road when the accident happened. One of the barricades hit her right thigh and caused a major fracture. The barricades were placed for a concretisation project.
A homeopathy doctor from the same area saw the accident and ran to help. The woman was stuck between two barricades and screamed in pain. The doctor, Dr. Aarati Oriya, said she asked the contractor present at the site to help. However, the contractor left the spot without helping.
Dr. Oriya and her friend took the injured woman to a nearby diagnostic centre in an autorickshaw. Dr. Oriya got the phone number of the victim’s son and informed him about the incident. The son then arranged for an ambulance.
The woman was later shifted to Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai Central. Sameer Ahuja, the victim’s son, said his mother has diabetes and high blood pressure.
As per reports, he said the contractor and officials must be punished for their carelessness. He also pointed out that road work is happening all over the city.
He said the accident could have been worse. His child goes to Bhakti Vedanta school, which is near the same road. He said it would have been a big tragedy if children had been injured.
Dr. Oriya said the barricades should have been supported with stones to stop them from falling during strong winds.
The Amboli police are investigating the case. The contractor has not been charged yet. As per sources, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has not given any response so far.
