Following complaints from local residents about noise pollution, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has sealed seven spice mills operating inside the Mahatma Phule Market. These mills were using heavy machinery that caused loud noise, disturbing nearby residents and shopkeepers.

Taking the complaints seriously, TMC Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao instructed officials to inspect the site and take necessary action. Based on his orders, Deputy Commissioner Shankar Patole, Chief Environment Officer Manisha Pradhan, Assistant Commissioner Rajesh Sonawane, and Naupada Assistant Commissioner Sopan Bhaik visited the mills for inspection.

The inspection revealed that the mills were using large machines that should be located in an industrial area—not inside a market. Noise levels recorded around 100 decibels, which is much higher than acceptable limits. In fact, a warning notice had already been issued to them in March 2025. Since the mills continued operating despite this, and failed to control the noise levels, the corporation decided to seal them, said Deputy Commissioner Patole.
