A video showing a pizza delivery agent being harassed for not speaking Marathi has gone viral online. The incident took place on Monday, May 12, in the Bhandup area of Mumbai, at the Sai Radhe building.

The delivery agent, Rohit Lavare, had gone to deliver an order when the couple started asking him to speak in Marathi. Lavare told them he did not know the language. Despite this, the couple continued to insist that he speak Marathi.

In the video, Lavare is seen asking, “Is speaking Marathi required in any way? However, why?”

The woman replies, “That’s how it is here.”

Lavare then responds, “Who says it has to be this way?”

The couple told the delivery worker they would not pay him unless he spoke in Marathi. Lavare, who works for a popular pizza chain, became visibly upset.

He said, “You shouldn’t have placed the order if this was your condition. Don’t want to pay? Fine, fine.”

The argument continued, and even though food was already delivered, it could not be taken back. The woman also told Lavare that she could record him, but he could not record them.

In the end, Lavare had to leave the place without receiving any money. The video has caused a controversy online. Many users have come out in support of the delivery worker. One user wrote, “I apologise to all Indians as a Marathi. This is not us.”

Another person commented that this kind of language issue started in Tamil Nadu and then spread to Karnataka and Maharashtra. Some called out the couple for trying to avoid paying.

Another person asked, “Is this the way to beg for free food?”

One user asked, “Why is it that they only harass the poor, hard-working & common people for not speaking the language? They should do the same to rich folks too. Go to corporate offices and ask those working there to speak in Marathi, and we'll see how they treat you for that.”
