The Aarey police have asked the traffic department to install speed breakers at 11 accident-prone spots on Aarey Milk Colony Road. This request comes after reports of the absence of safety measures on the road, which has led to many accidents.
As per a report by Mid-day, the police have recommended placing speed breakers and rumblers on the main Aarey road. Sources suggest that speeding by two-wheelers and four-wheelers has increased since the cement concreting of the road from Goregaon to Powai and Marol.
The police have also suggested setting up traffic signals at Picnic Point and Unit 5. These are two of the busiest intersections on the route. The lack of pathways has created serious dangers for pedestrians.
As per reports, at least four people died in accidents on this route in the past year. Speed breakers and warning signs existed earlier on Aarey Road but were removed during the road concreting. Locals say the new concrete road has made vehicles speed more, increasing accident risks.
Over 25,000 vehicles use the Aarey road daily. The road connects Powai and Marol with the Western Express Highway in Goregaon. It has been reported that careless driving, especially at night, puts wildlife and pedestrians at risk.
Residents have asked the police and forest department to increase patrols. They have also called for stricter fines against speeding drivers. A recent incident on February 8 highlighted the issue, where a motorcyclist in his late 20s died after his bike collided with a bus near Aarey Milk Colony.
Key locations proposed for speed breakers include Sankraman Studio, Chhota Kashmir Lake, Unit 6, the area between Modern Bakery and Aarey Hospital Junction, and Unit 19.
