The Mumbai Fire Brigade on Monday, May 5, issued safety guidelines for citizens and appealed to be cautious to avoid fire incidents amid recent rise in temperatures in the city.

It is pertinent to note that the rising temperatures are likely to put pressure on electrical systems at homes, offices, and industrial areas. This increases the risk of fires caused by overheating, short circuits, gas leaks, and overuse of appliances like fans, air conditioners, and refrigerators.

As per reports, Mumbai has witnessed an unusual surge in fire outbreaks from malls to high-rise buildings over the past two weeks. At least seven major blazes reported across residential, commercial and government properties were reported. They have claimed three lives and left behind charred structures leaving individuals financially devastated.

In a statement issued by the MFB, officials stated that heatwaves increase the risk of fire due to increased temperature, heating of electrical wiring, air conditioning systems, fridges and other appliances and the consequent stress on electricity consumption.

Data from the MFB shows a 5% rise in fire incidents in 2024, with 5,301 cases reported compared to 5,074 in 2023. The summer months saw the highest numbers: 484 fires in April, 473 in March, and 468 in May.

Here are the key directions for prevention from blaze:

- Inspect electrical wiring, plugs, switchboards, and appliances regularly in homes and commercial spaces.

- Switch off fan, AC, TV, mixer, geyser, and iron, immediately after use.

- If wiring is old or worn out, get it repaired with the help of electrician.

- Keep all emergency exits (staircases, entryways) clear at all times.

- Avoid plugging multiple electrical devices into a single socket. Prevent overloading and use electrical equipment properly.

- Regular maintenance of air conditioning systems is essential.

- Keep at least one fire extinguisher at home, in shops, or offices, and learn how to use it correctly.

- Avoid keeping mobile phones or other appliances charging overnight.

- Hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics must ensure their fire safety systems are fully functional and conduct timely fire safety audits.

- In case of a fire, do not delay and immediately call the emergency helpline number 101.
