The domestic and international flight ticket prices from Mumbai will see a hike from Friday, May 16, due to the implementation of the user development fee (UDF) approved by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority. This fee will be applicable till March 31, 2029.
It is pertinent to note that at Mumbai airport, this fee will be levied on both outbound and inbound journeys.
With this, the cost of one domestic ticket to and from Mumbai will go up by INR 250, international economy return tickets will increase by INR 875, and for business class, the hike will be INR 999. However, if you already booked air tickets on flights departing or arriving in Mumbai post-May 16, you do not have to pay this UDF.
According to the revised fee structure approved by AERA, domestic passengers departing from Mumbai will now pay INR 175 in UDF, up from nil, while arriving passengers will be charged a newly introduced fee of INR 75. For international economy class travellers, the UDF has been increased from INR 187 to INR 615 for departing passengers, and INR 260 has been introduced for arrivals, where no fee previously existed. Business class passengers on international routes will now pay INR 695 (departing) and INR 304 (arriving), both newly introduced.
This increased fee will be included in the flight ticket.
Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), a subsidiary of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the operator of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), had proposed to levy this fee for infrastructure development and technology upgrade projects at Mumbai airport.
Till August, 2024, this fee was INR 120 for domestic travel. Currently, this fee is applicable only to international passengers. Domestic flights coming to Mumbai will have to pay INR 75. While passengers coming from abroad will have to pay a fee of INR 260.
It had proposed a fee of INR 325 for domestic passengers and INR 650 for international passengers. Reactions are being heard on social media whether this fee hike will improve the travel experience, from toilets to the amenities.
