The air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai deteriorated significantly as it dropped nearly to the 'poor' category mark at 199 on Sunday evening, November 24.

This development comes at a time when temperatures are dipping across the city. Moreover, Mumbai has been reeling under moderate air quality since the withdrawal of monsoon in October.

On the same day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a minimum temperature of 19 and 23 degrees Celsius at Santacruz and Colaba observatory respectively.

According to reports, none of the city’s 22 monitoring stations recorded ‘good’ AQI levels. However, at least nine stations reeled under ‘poor’ air quality.

Meanwhile, previously on November 2, which was the day after Diwali celebrations, the city’s overall AQI slipped to 208, which is regarded as ‘poor’, but it significantly improved significantly a day after, when the AQI touched 151.

Besides the dip in minimum temperatures, the weather bureau also indicated that the city would wake up to fog/mist alongside haze during the mornings.

The weather department has forecasted a further drop up to 17 degrees on November 27-28. Experts have indicated that Mumbai is in for critical weeks ahead.

According to data revealed by the IMD, on Saturday night, November 23, Santacruz station recorded a minimum temperature of 19.6 degrees Celsius. Whereas the maximum temperature during the day also hovered nearly two degrees below the normal with the suburban as well as island city stations recording a temperature in 32-33 degrees.

Earlier, last week, on Thursday, November 21, the minimum temperature dipped to 18.5 degrees – making it Mumbai’s coldest November night since 2022.
