Central Railway will demolish platforms seven and eight at Kurla railway station. This is to make room for two new railway lines between Kurla and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, which will be used for harbour line services. Until the new setup is ready, CR will build a temporary platform for harbour line trains.
Currently, harbour line trains use the fifth and sixth tracks between Kurla and CSMT. These tracks handle around 600 services every day. But now, CR plans to use these tracks only for long-distance trains.
Work is also going on to build an elevated deck for these trains. The deck is 1,339 metres long. It includes a 413-metre ramp on the CSMT side and a 422-metre ramp on the Panvel side.
Construction on the elevated deck has progressed well over the last six months. Foundations for 142 pillars have been completed. Girders have also been launched in many areas. A 350-tonne crane is being used at the site.
The project will happen in two phases. In the first phase, long-distance trains will use the fifth and sixth tracks till Parel. In the second phase, the route will be extended to CSMT.
Kurla station is also being upgraded as part of this project. Existing foot-over bridges will be cut short at platform number seven. They will be connected to the eastern side with a new skywalk. The skywalk is now under construction. It will help people move from east to west.
To make room for the new railway lines, CR is also taking down the Sion Road overbridge. The bridge is halfway dismantled. Pedestrians can still move across the area. The new bridge is expected to be completed by June 2026.
