In order to create awareness about marine biodiversity, the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and Maharashtra Forest Department-Kandalvan Chamber have jointly developed a mobile app called 'Jalchar' for the recording and study of marine mammals and birds. Conservation of marine aquatic life will also be helped through this implementation.
Jalchar is an app that can be used in both Marathi and English languages and records marine, animal and bird species. Local fishermen, researchers, coast guard, naval personnel can report the animals, birds seen on this app. Also they can get the information about the recorded aquatic birds. The objective of this project is to collect complete information about marine animals found in coastal marine habitats of Maharashtra and thereby conserve marine life.
Meanwhile, photos of animals and birds can also be uploaded using the GPS system. If a marine animal comes to the shore (stranding), the forest department can get an early warning through this system. More detailed records can be collected on seasonal waterfowl. Therefore, it will be possible to plan the necessary measures for the protection of aquatic life. Also, there is a provision in this system to register if urgent help is required. This will help the relevant agencies to take immediate action in case of emergency. This application can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store.
Director of BNHS Kishore Rithe said that fishermen will be actively involved in this system. Jalchar App will be an important step towards protecting Maharashtra's rich marine biodiversity and increasing local participation in conservation. This application can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store.
