As part of a massive crackdown, the Mumbai traffic police have taken strict action against taxi and rickshaw drivers who violate the rules.
During the special drive, which was conducted from April 18 to May 2, 2025, a total of 48,417 e-challans were issued for various violations. Of these, majority were for refusing to take passengers on short-distance trips. This was despite the hike in base fare for autorickshaws from INR 23 to INR 26 and, kaali-peeli taxis will now charge INR 31 instead of INR 28, February 1 onwards.
The campaign focused on enforcing rules at key locations including railway stations, bus stands, market areas, and other crowded zones.
In a significant development, have initiated the process to suspend the driving licences of over 28,800 taxi and autorickhaw drivers for refusal to ply.
This development came following a surge in public complaints about the arbitrary behavior of auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in the city.
Additionally, 6,268 drivers were fined for overloading passengers, 1,164 were penalised for not wearing uniforms, and 12,171 challans were issued for other violations. A police officer said INR 40.25 lakh was collected from them in fines.
Authorities have urged citizens to report such violations through the Mumbai Traffic Police’s online portal or helpline so that swift and strict action can be taken against the offenders.
Meanwhile, an official from the Andheri RTO said that in the western suburbs, 4,553 auto drivers were booked recently and prosecuted for various offences. This included 89 for refusals, eight drivers for demanding excess or inflated fares, 164 for ferrying passengers more than the authorised capacity of the vehicle, two for rigged meters, 11 for rude behaviour, and 4,285 for other offences, such as driving without proper uniform and/or badges and flouting Motor Vehicles Rules.
